Limp Wrist Hand Print
Limp Wrist Hand Print
This hand gesture is so iconic I had to paint it. It's so simple yet so powerful.
The piece originated from a series I started two years ago, inspired by my fascination with hand signals and their coded meanings, especially those that intersect with the gay community.
Throughout grade school, my expressive hand gestures often branded me as a "sissy." During this time, I came face-to-face with the limp wrist when I noticed bullies using it to make fun of me. From them, I quickly learned of its derogatory use. I felt ashamed of who I was. Kids can be so cruel.
As I grew more confident with my identity and the world grew more accepting of the LGBTQ+ community, I felt a strong desire to contribute to the progress, which led me to create the piece. I wanted to reclaim the limp wrist by transforming it from a symbol of mockery to one of identity, empowerment, and pride—not just for myself, but for everyone. 🌈💪
This Limp Wrist is currently at the Bakersfield Museum of Art for their Resonantly Me exhibition.
